Fishing Report: March 2006
After a slow February, Winter Spring Salmon fishing is again picking up off the Sooke Bluffs. The fish are down deep and catches up to 18 pounds have been reported. The winter fish are silver bullets with lots of fighting action. A great tasting fish for the Barbeque.
February was an unusual fishing month with lots of rain and winds. Such weather makes for difficult fishing. Rolls were a challange let alone finding out where the fish are. Now that the herring are more predictable, finding the Salmon should be less of a task.
Popular gear so far has been "Glow Hoochys", Jelly Fish, and Mint Tulip. Krippled and Rhys Davis Teaser Heads with smaller anchovy also worked extremely well. The Coyote "mongoose and watermellon" spoons had action too. The flashers were mostly the glow series and leaders were shorter than the summer. 4' for bait and spoons, and 36" for hoochy's.
Halibut are starting to come in. White Halihogs soaked in "butt Juice", Large Herring and squid seem to have sucess. The season is still early however. The hot spots are still Constance Bank, Race Rocks, and Jordan River.
